Wake-up Call

As the Delhi gang rape incident was still fresh in the minds of people, Srinagar city witnessed a heartrending crime against a woman. A girl from Srinagar became a prey when two men threw acid on her face. This incident again reminds us about women safety in our state and exposed the vulnerability of women towards such atrocities. The incident was condemned by a large section of people including sane voices. The police also acted swiftly and arrested the culprits. But same questions arise here as were raised after Delhi rape incident- how to stop such incidents? How can we ensure safety to women? who are as equal as men in this society. After the Delhi gang rape, both Delhi as well as Central government initiated some measures towards women safety. Even our state government also spoke about amending the laws relating to crime against women. But now, the situation demands swift reaction from government. If the Delhi rape incident can send shocking waves and put people as well as a government on alert. Why acid throwing incident can’t do same? It must be taken as a wake up call and should not be buried like other incidents of past. Law has to ensure safety to women and speedy justice to the victims. In a state where laws like PSA & AFSPA can be implemented why there cannot be stringent laws for crime against women. In J&K human rights scenario has always been grim, but if the government is able to deliver on women safety front. It would be a remarkable achievement and would definitely help to improve human rights scenario here.
