Ex-militant Shot Dead In Sopore, His 3-Year-Old Son Critically Injured

Unknown gunmen on Friday evening shot dead a former militant while his 3-year-old son in his lap was injured when unknown gunmen fired upon him at Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

The gunmen opened fire upon the former Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen militant Bashir Ahmad Bhat son of Ghulam Mohammad Bhat outside his residence at Segipora Sopore when he was carrying his son Burhan Bashir in his arms, a senior police official said.

The 38-year-old Bhat and his son were immediately rushed to the sub-district hospital Sopore by his relatives and neighbours but Bhat succumbed to his injuries on the way, he said. Burhan has been shifted to SKIMS Soura in Srinagar for necessary treatment.

The police officer said that assailants had fired grenade at them but it did not explode. Later, they fired volley of bullets at them, causing grave injures Bashir and Burhan.

Soon after the incident, army and police launched searches in the area to nab the assailants, sources said.
