The Government, private health sector and other organization are preparing their facilities to defend against the third wave of Covid-19 as dire prospect of the coming wave is anticipated. Several medical experts across the world have already warned the nation about that the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic could hit India around October this year.

Experts suggest that third wave may not be as severe as the second wave, which left thousands of people across the country dead. More vaccination and Covid appropriate behavior could play an important role in mitigating these waves.

An Indian virologist and former member of the Indian SARSCoV- 2, Shahid Jameel previously cautioned and said a new Delta+ variant, a mutation of the Delta variant, could render Covid-19 vaccines ineffective. Jameel said the Delta+ variant may dodge immunity, both from vaccines and previous infections.

Director AIIMS, Dr Randeep Guleria advised people of India to follow norms and said the third wave may not come if India is able to vaccinate a large population.

However, around 40 lakh people were vaccinated against Covid-19 on Thursday, July 8, according to the official data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare According to the data, as of 9th July, 7 am, 40,23,173 people were vaccinated in the last 24 hours. Of this, 27,01,200 people received the first dose while 13,21,973 received the second.

ARE YOU VACCINATED?

According to experts, it will almost take eight to ten months to vaccinate an adequate number of people across the country. However, the unvaccinated people are at risk and can easily become carriers as well as most vulnerable to the deadly infection. As lockdowns have been partially lifted; people hardly seem to bother about wear masks, maintaining social distance, which paves the way for the virus to spread.

According to data around 36,89,91,222 total doses of the vaccine have been done so far. Of this, 29,86,78,913 are fi rst doses while 7,03,12,309 are second doses. Uttar Pradesh is leading in terms of fi rst doses with 3,05,40,558 doses. It is followed by Maharashtra with 2,82,50,377 doses and in Rajasthan 2,15,75,229 doses have been administered.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra is leading in terms of second doses with 75,22,771 second doses administered.

After the Indian government announced that discovery of a new variant, named Delta Plus, experts suggest that it’s impact will not be as severe as the second wave. They have predicted that the new variant would hit in October-November this year and emphasized on taking proper precautions to stop the spread.

Taking the vaccine jab as soon as possible and remaining vigilant while travelling to places and following Standard Operating Procedures
properly, is the only way to get through the 3rd Wave.

It is pertinent to mention that total infection tally across the country has reached over 30.7 million where as the active caseload currently stands at 4,58,727. The total death toll due to the virus has reached 4,05,939.
