Order ‘half baked’, social evils rampant in Kashmir Society



Srinagar, Feb 22 : A day after the government put a slab on the number of guests to be invited in marriages and parties, people on Wednesday hailed the decision, suggesting government to focus on the dowry system that has led to the suicides in the past.

The Kashmir News Service (KNS) correspondent talked to the people from all walks of life who hailed the order issued by the government while some among termed the order as half done.

Talking to KNS, Ghulam Muhammad, an elderly person who sell dry fruits at Maharaja Bazar said, “I am happy with the decision taken by the government of the state but the government should also ban the dowry system in the state.”

While hailing the decision, he said that inviting guests is not a big issue but some people who loot the family of bride’s should be dealt with strictly. “Several brides who were supposed to get married had attempted suicide so far the grooms family had been demanding dowry from them, which they couldn’t afford,” an elderly said.

Another elderly, Ghulam Hassan Wani told KNS that the yesterday’s government order is appreciable. “The step taken by the government is good but the government should not ignore the main thing. We appeal to the government to impose blanket ban on dowry system and those involved in such heinous crimes should be dealt with strictly,” Hassan said.


Pertinently, the government Tuesday issued an order putting a slab on the number of guests to be invited in marriages and parties.

As per the order issued by J&K Ministry of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Minister (CAPD), hosts can invite 500 guests for daughter’s marriage and 400 for son’s marriage. The order would come effective from April, this year. (KNS)
