SRINAGAR, Jan 18 TKSNN: Panic gripped Hyderpora area in the city’s outskirts when security forces fired upon a speedy car after it did not stop for security check.
In an another incident in north Kashmir Sopore town, people ran for safety, when a live grenade was disposed off under a mock exercise by security forces near a bunker in main chowk Sopore.
Reports said that an army, which was busy in checking the vehicles near Hyderpora flyover, asked a car to stop for security check. The driver of the car ignored the signal of the army men and ran from the spot.
The army men fired several rounds towards the vehicles, but the driver of the vehicle managed to cross the barrier and fled from the spot. The army men tried hard to chase the speedy vehicle but the driver of the car successfully managed to give a slip to the forces.
The incident created panic in the area, the shopkeepers ran for safety. The nearby showrooms and other business establishments also closed their establishments and also ran for safety.
The pedestrian and traffic movement also stopped in the area. Senior officials of police and army rushed to the spot to assess the situation. The additional troops were deployed to cordon off the entire area.
The police created additional check points to check the vehicles plying on the Hyderpora area. The forces also checked the identity cards of various people working in nearby showrooms and offices.
However, no one was arrested during these searches.
The security forces officials on the spot told the reporters that they are investigating the incident. They, however, added that it was not a fidayeen attack carried out by militants last year on the same spot.
They, however, said that two to three people, probably militants, were traveling in a car. They said that when the forces asked a car to stop for security checkup, they ignored the forces’ signal and ran from
the pot.
They also said that the Naka was laid as part of the security preparations ahead of coming Republic Day.
In another incident at Sopore, a mock drill of security forces near the main market Sopore created panic among the locals and shopkeepers after a live grenade was exploded with a big bang.
Eyewitnesses said that people ran for safety and shopkeepers downed their shutter anticipating a militant attack in the town.
The mock exercise also created panic also among the security forces deployed in the area. They also suspect it a militant attack. They even took up positions in nearby buildings.
However, the police, who usually remain deployed in the towhship asked the locals that it was a mock exercise of security forces and not an attack.
