SMC launches massive sanitation drive

Will act tough against vendors for blocking roadsides: Commissioner

Srinagar, Oct 31 : A massive sanitation drive was today held in various medical institutions including Medical College/SMHS Hospital, Lal-Ded hospital, Bone & Joint Hospital Barzulla, CD Hospital Dalgate, JLNM Hospital, Rainawari and Office Complex ERA.


SMC in a handout issued to KNS said the focus of the drive undertaken in connection with the already chalked out program of “Rashtriya Ekta Divas National Unity Day was to make these public health institutions trash free. The Civic Body said hundreds of sanitary workers were deputed along with the machinery to carry out the task.

The sanitation drive was also conducted in Hazratbal Shrine, Dastgeer Sahib Shrine Khanyar, Makhdoom Sahib, Gurdawara Rainawari where the premises were thoroughly cleaned and all its exteriors made dust free.

Besides this, SMC also organised walkathon with Newsline NGO from SKICC to emphasize the significance of cleanliness in our day to day lives and as a part of Swachh Bharat Mission.

Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation Riyaz Ahmed Wani who was Chief guest on the occasion flagged of the event and said that SMC will take every possible initiative to achieve desired results for final disposal of garbage and make Srinagar the cleanest destination.

Talking to KNS, Wani said to ensure smooth movement of vehicular traffic and avoid frequent traffic jams, the SMC has launched a campaign today and asked the vendors to clear the roadside otherwise from tomorrow onwards they wills seize the carts/stalls of those who set it them on roadsides.
While interacting with the students, the Commissioner SMC appealed them to share equal responsibility in making Srinagar city clean and garbage free as they are the future of the nation and have a positive role to play by creating more awareness on cleanliness and also in cleaning the surroundings too.

He also emphasized on anti littering and requested public in general and students in particular to restrain from littering habits.
Multiple cultural shows were also organised in Nishat, Dargah, Eidgah Park and Badamwari followed by essay competitions that were held in Kothi bagh school and Muslim Public School Rajbagh.

The students of Mallabagh School carried out rally upto Habbak crossing followed by a rally taken out by the Alhuda school students up to Pantha Chowk Srinagar on the occasion. (KNS)
