Srinagar, May 17: The State Human Rights Commission, while taking the suo motto cognizance of the media reports about barring Hurriyat (G) Chairman Syed Ali Geelani for medical consultation, has directed police to file report explaining circumstances in which the Hurriyat leader was restrained from going to the hospital.
“Senior Superintendent of Police, Budgam, is directed to file the report by Monday explaining circumstances in which Mr. Geelani was restrained from going to the hospital. The SSP is directed to be personally present on the day of hearing,” SHRC Chairperson Justice Bilal Nazki directed.
As per Hurriyat (G) spokesman, ailing Geelani was barred by police on Tuesday from visiting doctors at SMHS hospital.
The SHRC chairman has also taken suo motto cognizance of use of sirens by various people and VIPS.
Justice Nazki has asked the IGP Traffic, JK Srinagar, to explain whether sirens are permissible under law to be used by anybody except ambulances and fire fighting vehicles.
“If it is not permitted what action has been taken so far against such drivers. The report shall be filed within a week, least on May 24,” the SHRC directed.
The Commission said that use of sirens besides causing noise pollution create inconvenience to other road users including pedestrians. The people accompanying these VIPs humiliate other drivers and other pedestrians. (KNS)
