In a bid to check increasing crime against women in Srinagar, police had deployed women police flying squads to ensure safety of women. As crime against women has recorded a constant increase over the years, the police, in a bid to curb the menace, had set up women squads at all the sensitive locations around tuition centers in Srinagar.
Parraypora, Baghat, Barzulla and Hyderpora are the hub of private tuition centers and the deployment of women police squad has been proving fruitful in Srinagar. Majority of the girls have appreciated the drive and have rendered it a successful initiative.
A group of students at a private coaching center in Barzulla said that they have first time seen women police playing an active role to eradicating the menace of eve-teasing.
Over the years, there have been several cases of eve teasing, harassment and even acid attacks that has prompted the authorities to swing into the action.
On December 11 2014, a 21-year-old girl suffered severe burn injuries on her face, when two unknown men threw acid on her in the city outskirts. The girl is undergoing the treatment in Chennai.
”As a part of counter measure, to put check on crime against women, police have taken the step of deploying all- women police flying squad vehicles in coaching hub of Parraypora and Baghat areas to create deterrence affect and ensure safety to the students,” a police officer at Police Station Baghat said.
The City Police has also asked the students if they feel any kind of threat or eve teasing incident, they should seek help from the nearby female police squads.
”We welcome this step of the administration for taking crime against women seriously and tackling them in professional manner. Deploying the all-women’s police squad in and around colleges and tuition centers is a welcome step, ” said Afreen -a student.
”Now , there is a sense of security as presence of women cops will keep miscreants away. Besides, now it has become easier to register complaints with women cops in case of any harassment,” said Saima, a class-xii student from Srinagar.
According to the police, the essence of the idea is to give victims an easier way to approach women cops.
”This endeavor is a part of initiatives to be taken by police to sensitize the society about the dignity and honour to be extended to ladies, ”said Gulshan Akhter, SHO Rambagh.
She further said that this step to deploy all – women flying squad was initiated as some victims feel uncomfortable to talk on such sensitive issues with opposite gender. She suggested students not to remain silent in such cases.
