After the abolishment of monarchy, Nepal which ran without a permanent constitution is now seen as Afghanistan on ethnic lines. Years before former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto had wondered that if Nepal was going the Afghanistan way. The present state of turmoil over Nepal’s new constitution, based on the principles of federalism, secularism, republicanism and parliamentary democracy proves the prophecy of Bhutto’s observation. Madhesis and Tharus of Terai, dividing Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are busy expanding their influences by fighting for more autonomy. Similarly Limbus, Khambus, Magars, Gurungs and Tamangs are the like stern.
Some other Nepali sections have been demanding a Hindu state though Mongoloid origins Buddhists oppose the demand. Madhesis who go well in having socio-economic relationship with India have suffered discrimination. They were looked down upon by the former ruling elite and sections of hill Nepalis. Mongols of Nepal have also been marginalized for a long period. Tharus being the worst sufferers were the bonded labourers.
The Madhesis started to vocalize about their rights when King Birendra reintroduced the multi-party democracy. With the autonomy made by Maoists for all ethnic groups, Madhesi movement got encouraged. Mainstrem Madhesi leaders like Bijay Gachchhedar and Mahant Thakur and former Maoist Upendra Yadav turned the Madhesi agitation into a mass movement. After the first constituent assembly, the Madhesi parties performed miserably as their leaders were accused of corruption. When the constitution-framing process was in its final stages, Madhesi parties got together and fought back through street agitations.
Some BJP leaders wanted Nepal to become a Hindu state. Nepali leadership named the negotiation of NDA government with Nepal as an external interference. An indefinite economic blockade of Nepak by Madhesi agitators followed. Indian channels were blacked out on Monday by Nepali Cable operators Nepali and Madhesi agitators reacted by blacking out Nepali Channels in Terai districts of Bara and Parsa. The hostility of Nepali politicians and Media toward India has been getting extended support from China.
