Kulgam encounter ends with death of two militants

Reports said that both the militants died after the residential house they had taken cover in was razed down by the forces with an explosive device.

The 15-hour-long gunfight between militants and government forces in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district ended Monday with the death of both the rebels, police said.

Reports said that both the militants died after the residential house they had taken cover in was razed down by the forces with an explosive device.

The slain militants have been identified as Javed Ahmad, a resident of Redwani and Idrees Ahmad Nengroo son of Ghulam Hassan, a resident of Yaripora area of the district.

As the news of the death of the militants spread in the area, the locals took to streets and pelted stones at the forces who responded with tear gas shells, witnesses said.

Earlier, a civilian was killed as violent protests erupted near the site of the gunfight late Sunday evening.

The gunfight that broke out at 8pm Sunday when the hiding militants fired on a joint party of Army 1 RR and CRPF who had cordoned off Redwani Bala village of Khudwani area had resumed again today morning following a lull during the night.
