Govt allows Friday prayers at historic Jamia Masjid after 8 weeks

The state government led by ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), today allowed the mandatory Friday congregation prayers at historic Jamia Masjid, Srinagar after eight weeks.

All the gates of the historic Masjid that remained locked for the past eight weeks were allowed to open by the state government today.

Jamia Masjid is the traditional strong hold of Mirwaiz Family of Kashmir and the Friday sermons are delivered by the present Mirwaz (head priest) Molvi Umar Farooq.

The Jamia Market was also open and shopkeepers were allowed to do the normal business after eight weeks.

Meanwhile, there were no restrictions in and around the downtown area of Srinagar on Friday.
