A 12th class student who is supposed to appear in his annual examination next week has been detained by police, accusing him of stone-throwing in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

The detainee, Aaqib Ahmad Pandit of Kareemabad village of the district was detained by police a week ago, his father, Ghulam Mohiuddin Pandit told Srinagar-based news agency GNS over phone. “He was not pelting stones but was caught for none of his crime. His exams are on 13th November but police are not releasing him. How can he prepare for the exam while being in custody of police,” he said.

He said that the police are saying that they cannot release him as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit the Valley. “Not only they cite Modi’s visit as the reason for his prolonged detention, but even say that they will then think whether to release or not. This is height of injustice and if my son misses’ exam or fails to perform who is to be blamed? Modi or police,” he asked.

Police on the other side said that Aaqib is a stone-pelter and he can’t be released as of now. “We will think about his release once the PM’s visit culminates,” a senior police officer told GNS.
