Young Kashmir saves precious lives

Srinagar, Sep 13: Younger generation of Kashmir has put in heroic efforts during the past eight days to save the people who were inundated in floods across the Valley.

In absence of any help from the local administration and the government young boys put their lives at stake and pulled out hundreds of people who were stranded at different places.

Soon after the water seeped into the houses of people young teenage boys and young men in their twenties and early thirties appeared in the submerged areas. “We know no one is going to help us. We have to help ourselves,” said

Tauseef Ahmed, 22, of Iqbal colony HMT.

Narrating what he and others went when gushing waters inundated their colony, Tauseef said, “It was like a nightmare. We had never imagined that water will enter our homes and would occupy more than one and a half storey.”

“I first pulled out my mother and sister, and at the end I helped my father to come out,” he added.

Tauseef said that soon after he made his family safe he along with other men formed groups to rescue the people who were trapped in their houses in Iqbal Colony, Umerabad and adjoining areas.

Like Tauseef hundreds of young boys acted as angels in their respective areas across the city. “We knew that it’s us who have to pull out the stranded people. We didn’t do any favour to anyone. It was our duty,” said Faheem, 23, of Qammerwari area.

Elders were in all praise for the young heroes of Kashmir. “Had these young boys not acted on time many of us would have died in our homes,” said Mushtaq Ahmed.

Besides helping the people of marooned areas youngsters are leading from the front to accommodate the flood victims who are on the streets. Young boys and men could be seen arranging food and accommodation for the victims in a few areas where floods have not struck. In absence of policemen on the roads youngsters are seen helping people with the traffic management as only a few roads are operational and accessible for the vehicles.
Kashmir Scenario salutes the young Kashmiri heroes and appreciates their effort to help masses out.
