Two youths injured ‘after forces open fire’ in Aishmuqam

Srinagar, March 8: Two youths were injured on Tuesday morning after army troopers allegedly opened fire in Aishmuqam area of Anantnag district during a cordon operation.

Police sources told GNS that army’s 3RR cordoned off Iram colony and Magray Mohalla and launched search operation as it suspected presence of militants. As the army began searches of houses, local youths started protests and resorted to stone-pelting on army, they said.




“As the youths continued stone pelting and protests, army troopers resorted to firing on them, injuring two people,” the sources said. The sources and police said that the two youths were hit by bullets were identified as Javaid Ahmad Wani, 22 and Amir Ahmad Sheikh, 20.

According to sources, Javaid was hit in neck and was shifted to Srinagar for specialized treatment while Amir is being treated upon at Anantnag as he was hit in arm. The police said that the incident took place at around 8 in the morning at Iram Colony. “We have started investigations,” a police officer said.




When GNS contacted army’s Srinagar—based spokesperson, Col NN Joshi, he refused to comment. Meanwhile, people observed a shutdown in Aishmuqqam against the firing incident.
