A top Hizbul Mujahideen militant died in a gunfight with government forces in Kulgam district of south Kashmir on Sunday evening, police said.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Kulgam, Mumtaz Ahmad said that Dawood Sheikh was killed in the initial round of gunfire exchanged between militants and forces in Buchroo village of the district.
Sheikh, a resident of Qaimoh village of the district, was active since past three years.
“He was a most wanted militant,” said Ahmad.
The gunfight had erupted in the village after forces launched a search operation in the village following specific inputs about the presence ofmilitants, said an official.
