‘Batamaloo, Bemina observes shutdown’
Srinagar, 15 June (KNS): Thousands of people Wednesday attended the funeral prayers of Tanvir Sultan Sheikh who was killed in Kud “gunfight” on Monday.
Family sources told KNS that the body of Tanveer was handed over to the family in the wee hours of this morning.
Eye-witnesses said that Tanveer’s funeral procession was held at Bemina at his residential place where thousands of people took participation and after that the gathering mostly youth accompanied the body of the slain youth from his residential place, Bemina to martyr’s graveyard Batamaloo.
Witnesses said that his second funeral procession was held at Dandirkhah Batamaloo, which was also attended by the thousands of people.
Tanveer was buried in martyr’s graveyard Batamaloo where his elder brother Gowhar Sultan, Divisional Commander of Tehreek-ul-Mujahiiden, is buried.
The people accompanying Tanveer’s body were chanting pro-freedom and pro-Islam slogans.
Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in strength in the area to thwart any possible protest.
Meanwhile, a spontaneous shutdown was observed in Batamaloo area and Bemina area of Srinagar against the killing of Tanveer.
All the shops and business establishments remain closed throughout the day while the public transport was thin on roads.
The closure of Batamaloo area resulted in massive traffic jam thereby leaving the commuters to lurch at large.
Clashes erupted between youth and forces in Batamaloo area of Srinagar after the body was slain youth was laid to rest.
Witnesses said that youth took to streets while chanting anti-India, pro-freedom slogans. “Police resorted to tear smoke shells to disperse the agitated protesters in the area,” witnesses said.
On Tuesday, the government had said that Tanveer Sultan Sheikh, son of Muhammad Sultan Sheikh, resident of Bemina was a militant and he was killed in a shoot-out with police and paramilitary forces.
Nonetheless, family contested the claims stating that how an active militant can stay freely at home.
“Tanveer was innocent. He was travelling to Amritsar for medical check-up,” family said. (KNS)
