Silent life after snowfall in Kashmir

TKSNN: The heavy snowfall witnessed in valley since Tuesday night closed the Jammu Kashmir national highway. Many areas in city were inaccessible till evening because of poor snow clearance.

Besides putting normal life out of gear, the incessant snowfall has affected postponement of examinations of secondary and university levels till further orders from the examination controlling authorities.

According to the our correspondents, the power supplies remained affected at large since the snowfall started and also the vital road links are blocked due to the non clearance of snow.

In Srinagar, people preferred to stay indoors as the government offices witnessed thin attendance on Wednesday. Shops in various areas also remained closed. The officials at Srinagar International Airport informed that due to the massive snowfall, the authorities cancelled all the flights from and to Srinagar Airport.

The traffic department also closed Srinagar Jammu highway and reports maintained further that the highway shall remain closed till the weather improves. The University officials also have decided to postpone the scheduled examinations till further orders.

The state metrological department stated that there would be no change in the weather in next 10 hours and after that the weather is likely to improve. The office informed further that such massive snowfall has been witnessed in valley after 12 years and avalanches and snow slides cannot be ruled out.

People across valley complained that the snowfall has affected the power supplies at large and no serious effort has been taken to rectify the same and that the people had to suffer due to the crises. The residents of various areas also complain that the concerned departments didn’t clear the snow from major areas due to which the traffic was badly affected. ”We faced several difficulties in buying the essentials as there was snow snow clearance team that could clear the snow from roads,” said Mukhtar Kanth, a resident of Lal Bazar.

The officials when contacted stated that it has become difficult for the snow clearance machines to ply on roads as the snowfall continues. “we can only act once the snowfall stops,” said a senior official of the concerned department wishing not to be named.

The power crises were also reported from various areas of valley including some areas of Srinagar. Though the electricity was later restored in various areas, but the major portion still reels under darkness. After the repeated attempts, the contact with the PDD officials was not established.

The snowfall also effected the telecom services as the residents from various areas informed that their landline connections are dead due to the breakage in the connection lines. The wireless networks also were reported to be affected as after the repeated attempts, the phone calls of several mobile subscribers were not fructified
