No land available in Valley for Sainik colony: Govt

Divisional adm writes to Home department

Srinagar, June 29 : Setting the row over Sainik Colony to rest, divisional administration has cleared to the Home department that it has no land available in the Valley for building the colony for retired army soldiers. As per letter No. Div Com/LAS/2872/1860 sent to Principal Secretary Government Home Department on18 May, the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, has clearly said that no land is available in the Valley for establishing Sainik Colony.

“Kindly refer to your No. Home/SSB/SM/211, it is stated that there is lack availability of land for Sainik Colony,” the letter says.

Sainik Colony has become a major issue after reports that the government had proposed last year to set up a colony for ex-servicemen.

The government found itself in tight spot as separatists started joint protest programmes against the proposal of setting up the colony for retired soldiers.

Opposition National Conference and Congress too objected to the colony but were at peace with a colony for state subjects ex-servicemen.

Later, the government had to issue many clarification that there is n such proposal for a colony as no land is available in Valley for it.

However, the fresh letter issued by the Divisional administration in May has again cleared the government’s position over the issue. (KNS)
