Advocate Shahid ul Islam said a contingent of police and paramilitary personnel laid a siege around the Nigeen residence of Mirwaiz and informed him of his house detention.
Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was placed under house arrest on Thursday evening, a spokesman of the outfit said.
The development comes on the eve of Pakistan Independence Day, celebrated on August 14.
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in Srinagar and the rest of the valley to prevent any pro-Pak rallies on the day.
