Memory: Kashmir lawmaker recalls Chattergam killings

Javid Mustafa Mir, an opposition lawmaker who was the near the scene when army shot at the occupants of a car in Kashmir’s Chattergam, killing two teenagers on the spot, recalls the incident.

“I was present in the area when this unfortunate incident occurred. I heard a burst of fire, then one more burst and then another. After three bursts, I heard alternate gun shots. These youth had tried to stop the vehicle but they got scared as they all were in the prime of their life. There was no need to fire upon the vehicle after it had collided with the electric pole. Army attacked the vehicle with an intent to kill.

I was shocked to see scores of bullets marks on the car. Even police officials admitted in front of me that it was a cold blooded murder.

I reached the spot and saw scores of bullets had been pumped into the bodies of these youth. When I touched one of the body, my both hands got soaked with blood and I realized, how barbaric these army soldiers were while shooting these innocent youth.
One of the slain youth Mehraj-ud-din Dar was a frequent visitor to my home and I still can’t believe that he is no more.

If Army is really sincere in punishing the guilty then they should identify these killers and initiate action against them. They know the faces and they know who were present on the mobile post. They can punish them without any delay but I know they won’t. They will buy time and again the same would be repeated that has happened in the past. I have no faith in Army inquiry.
How long can army befool the people of Kashmir by ordering ‘fake’ inquiries and constituting ‘imaginative’ commissions. I challenge them to come up with a single instance whereby they punish their own men responsible for the killing of innocent Kashmir people.”
