Srinagar, May 2(KNB) In a historic development, the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Sports Council is once again poised to host twin training camps for the India U-17 National Team. These camps are in preparation for the upcoming SAFF U-17 Championship and the AFC U-17 Championship Qualifiers, scheduled for September and October, respectively.
The All-India Football Federation (AIFF) expressed its gratitude to the J&K Sports Council and the Union Territory administration for their unwavering support. Last year, Srinagar played host to the India U-16 National Team training camp under the guidance of renowned footballer Ishfaq Ahmad. Ishfaq Ahmad, who was nominated as the head coach, led the team to victory in the SAFF U-16 Championship held in Thimphu, Bhutan in September 2023.
The impact of these national camps in J&K has been significant, providing valuable acclimatization for the players. The facilities and assistance received have garnered applause from all quarters.
The AIFF has requested arrangements for lodging, boarding, and transportation for a 42-member contingent, including 35 players and 7 officials, starting from the first week of June this year.
Ishfaq Ahmed has been appointed as the Head Coach for the twin camps, ensuring that the teams are well-prepared for the international events.
Srinagar, once known primarily for hosting the Santosh Trophy, Federation Cup, and Hero I-League matches, is now emerging as the preferred location for football training. Factors such as specialized training facilities and acclimatization opportunities have contributed to this transformation.
Ishfaq Ahmed, the Head Coach, emphasized the unique opportunity presented by hosting consecutive National Camps in Srinagar. He believes that this routine practice will not only benefit local football players but also infuse new energy into aspiring young talents.
Nuzhat Gull, Secretary of the J&K Sports Council, highlighted the region’s passion for football and its growing popularity. She expressed optimism that a focus on grassroots development and professional aspects would create a new chapter in J&K’s football history.
Jammu and Kashmir has a proud tradition of producing exceptional football players. Notably, Mohammad Hamad, who plays for Real Kashmir FC, and Muheet Shabir, from the J&K Sports Council Football Academy, were recently honored as the best defender and best goalkeeper, respectively, in the Indian League tournament.(KNB)
