Srinagar: The much awaited widening of the vital Shopian-Bijbehara road has been approved by the government of India. The union ministry of Road Transport and Highways has sanctioned an amount of Rs 48.93 crore for the up-gradation and widening of the road which connects Shopian with Bijbehara.

The road is the vital link to around two dozen villages that connects them to south Kashmir’s largest town Anantnag. The union ministry has directed the state government to adopt e-tendering on mandatory basis for the speedy execution of the project-which is of utmost important as the renovation of this road would give relief to thousands of people of the area.

Satisfied with the much needed development, MLA Wachi Aijaz Ahmed Mir said the widening of the road would pave way for development in the area as it would serve as a main link between the people of Shopian with the National Highway and will in turn boost economy in the area.

He said the widening of the road was also a dream project of former chief minister Mufti Muhammad Sayed. “Due to the efforts of late Mufti sahab we have been successful in getting this long pending project approved,” Mir said.
