After major crackdown against the pro-freedom leadership and activists, the police today detained Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Langate and Awami Itehad Party (AIP) president Engineer Abdul Rasheed ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit.
AIP spokesman, Inam-un-Nabi told GNS over phone that Rasheed was detained near Dangiwacha area of Baramulla district by a police contingent. “Though he resisted police action and refused to get inside the vehicle but he was forcibly bundled into police vehicle and taken District Police Lines Handwara. The people also tried to stop police from detained Rasheed,” he said.
Earlier, the spokesman of AIP said, Rasheed addressed various public meetings and urged people not to attend the rally of PM Modi and stage protests on that day. The PM is scheduled to address a rally at Sher-e-Kashmir stadium in Sonwar on November 7. “Engineer Rashid made it clear that forced programmes and speeches by caging people and resorting to arrest spree can lead us nowhere,” he said and condemned the police action.
Pertinently, nearly 200 pro-freedom leaders and activists have been detained in Valley to ensure the peaceful conduct of Modi’s rally as resistance leadership has called for a counter rally on that day.
