Srinagar, November 10 : A senior police officer was injured as clashes between youth and government forces erupted in parts of Kashmir Valley after Friday prayers today.
A police official told news agency GNS that a DySP rank police officer was injured after he was hit by a stone during clashes in Shopian district today. The official said that the cop was injured when a group of youth started pelting stones on local MLA’s house at Memander in Shopian district. He said that the senior officer was hit in head by a stone and received many stitches. “He is stable but doctors have advised him to take rest,” the police official added.
Meanwhile, clashes erupted between youth and forces at Braripora area of Nawa Kadal in downtown Srinagar after Friday prayers. Police said the youth pelted stones on forces men and in retaliation, they fired teargas canisters. There was no report of injury to anyone in the clashes. The stone-pelting clashes also broke out at Parimpora Foot Bridge in summer capital.
The youth and government forces also clashed with each other at Lal Chowk area of Anantnag district after Friday prayers. Police burst teargas and chased away the groups of youth. The situation in Lal Chowk remained tense due to clashes. Meanwhile, police have detained at least six youth including 10th class students during night raids at Dangerpora area of Pulwama district on charges of stone-pelting.
A police officer while confirming the arrests said that the arrested youth are involved in stone-pelting and other law and order disturbances. At least four youth are students and are appearing in 10th class exams. The families of the detained students have demanded their immediate release and said that they could miss their papers if they continue to remain in police custody. “We appeal police to release them because their careers are at stake,” the families said.
A shutdown meanwhile was observed for fourth consecutive day in Rajpora and Aglar areas of the Pulwama district against the recent killings of three Jaish militants. (GNS)
