Dr Javed Chowdhary likely to be new GMC Principal’

Srinagar, Dec 22 : The Establishment-cum-Selection Committee of the Health and Medical Education Department in a recently held meeting has proposed the name of Dr Javed Chowdhary to be the new Principal Government Medical College (GMC), reliable sources told KNS.

The post of the Principal is being present held by Dr Kaiser Ahmed on temporary basis. However, the High Court has already directed the State government to fill the coveted post on regular basis rather than temporary basis.

The Government on December 19 last year, appointed Dr Kaiser –junior to Chowdhary — as acting Principal in his ‘own pay and grade’.

Chowdhary had approached the court after then GMC Principal Dr Rafiq Pampori had resigned and sought voluntary retirement alleging that he was not being consulted in important decisions relating to the college.

Sources privy to the meeting revealed to the KNS that the government is all set to elevate Dr Chowdhary as the next principal of GMC.

However, various civil society groups and other associations have already resented and opposed Dr Chowdhary elevation citing it was during his tenure as the Medical Superintendent at tertiary care pediatric GB Pant hospital when increasing number of baby deaths came to the fore. Dr Chowdhary was then removed from the post.

“He couldn’t handle a single hospital. How can he now run a group of tertiary care hospitals,” said a prominent social worker.

Despite repeated attempts Minister for Health and Medical Education Bali Bhagat didn’t answer the phone.

“I have no information about it. There might be something. Let’s wait,” said MoS Health and Medical Education, Aasiya Naqash. (KNS)
