After Friday prayers; clashes erupt in Nowhatta, Humhama, Sopore

Barring minor stone pelting incidents, situation remained under control: DGP



Srinagar, Mar 17 : Following the Friday congregational prayers, the clashes erupted between youth and forces at various places across the Valley on Friday.

According to KNS correspondent, as soon as the Friday prayers ended in the historic Jamia Masjid in old city here, the youth took to streets and chanted slogans in favour of ‘Azadi’.

The youth later pelted stones on the forces deployed in the area resulted in the clashes between forces and youth.

Witnesses said that forces later resorted to tear smoke shells to disperse the youth who were throwing stones on them.

Meanwhile, similar reports were reported from Humhama area of Srinagar.

KNS has learnt that the forces used tear smoke shells to disperse the youth who were pelting stones on them.

Reports said that clashes also erupted in Sopore town of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district after the mandatory congregational Friday prayers ended in Jamia Masjid there.

Amid pro-freedom sloganeering, the youth according to the reports took to streets following which they pelted stones on the forces.

Director General of Police (DGP), S P Vaid told KNS that barring a few minor stone pelting incidents, the situation across the Valley remained under control.




He also said that the posters reading ‘election boycott’ have also been pasted in some areas during the day. (KNS)
