Abdul Haq inaugrates 5.18 crore gallon capacity irrigation Dam in Lolab

Farmers amused as Dam will irrigate 7000 Kanals agricultural land

Lalpora (Lolab), June 11: Minister for Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Law and Justice Abdul Haq today inaugrated a water storage dam at Hapatnaar in Kakpora village of Lolab valley.




The 5.18 crore galoon capacity dam will irrigate more than 7000 Kanals of agricultural land giving major relief to the farmers of 13 villages of the Lolab valley . This was the long pending demand of the people of the area as the farmers as according to them the land was turning barren owing to absence of irrigation.

The dam was constructed by Irrigation and Flood Control aat an estimated cost of Rs 5.330 crore. Minister was accompanied by Chief Engineer I&FC Javid Jawad, DC Kupwara, SSP Kupwara, ADC Kupwara, Exen I&FC Kupwara and SDM lolab besides other officials..


While inaugurating the dam, Minister congratulated the people for getting the source of irrigation for their Agriculture land. He said the people suffered all these years as their Agriculture was badly hit owing to absence of irrigation water. He said the rain water will get stored in the dam which has been constructed uphills and then channelized into the paddy fields.

He said three other similar dams are under construction and will be completed soon . He said these dams will store rainwater which will be used for irrigation. He said construction of these dams will solve the problem of irrigation in Lolab valley.

Minister said the area around the dam will be developed as a park for tourist attraction. He said he will ask the Floriculture department to develop a park around the dam sothat people sit there to have a view of the lolab valley.

Minister further said the government is working on the proposal to open Bandipora-Lolab road and the work may start this year. He said governemnt is also working on the prosal of construction of a tunnel to shorten the distances and made the valley easily assessable for the tourists. He said government beleive in taking long term sustainable projects for the development of the area and doesn’t beleive in short term temporary projects.

Abdul Haq said governemnt is keep to bring Lolab valley on tourist map. He said the Lolab valley will be connected with Bandipora and Gurez valley . He said these conectivities will make the Lolab valley gateway for the beautiful pastures of Gurez and will be a focal point for trekkers.

He said the government will take every step to develope tourism in the valley.
