“Local youth can be more helpful than NDRF and army”
SSrinagar Apr 01: Asking the state and central government to make full proof arrangements to meet any possible flood threats, the Congress party said Wednesday that the volunteers, who played a commendable role during the September floods, should also be roped in to tackle any eventuality.
Congress Organising and publicity Secretary, Salman Nizami, said that the people in Jammu and Kashmir were reeling under intense fear due to the continuous rainfall that has created flood like situation. He said the government must act swiftly and take concrete steps to ensure that the people do not suffer in case of any eventuality.
“The government must also rope in the volunteers, who played a vital role during the 2010 floods. The youth can be more helpful than the rescue teams of NDRF and army, since they know the places very well,” said Nizami. He added that the government should also move people from landslide prone areas to the safer places and provide them necessary facilities.
The Congress leader said that administration must also press into service men and machinery to clear the waterlogged localities of Srinagar.
Urging the central government to release the relief package for the flood hit victims; Nizami said that only 10 percent funds have been released by the centre leaving most of the affected families in lurch.
