Two killed in army firing in Kashmir

Srinagar 4 Nov :Two people were killed and two others injured Monday when Indian army troops at a check post fired at a vehicle that allegedly jumped the inspection point in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

“Soldiers of 53 RR at the check post in Chattergam area fired at the fleeing vehicle, which resulted in bullet injuries to four occupants,” a police source said.

Official sources said that troopers of army’s 53 Rashtriya Rifles tried to stop the vehicle (bearing registration number JK01R- 0321) during a checking at the main market in Chattergam this evening. However, the vehicle didn’t stop and forces opened heavy fire.

In the incident, four persons who were travelling in the car sustained critical bullet injuries, sources said, adding “All the injured were taken to army’s 92 base hospital here in Srinagar for treatment.” However, two of them Faizal Mohammad (26) and Mehraj-ud-Din Dar (27) residents of Nowgam were pronounced dead on arrival.

While the two injured Shakir Ahmad Bhat (30) and Zahid Ahmad Naqash (25) of Nowgam have been operated by the doctors at the army hospital.

An eyewitness said incident took place around 5:20 pm, when army men opened unprovoked fire at the car. After firing, the soldiers, he said, rushed to the spot and took the inured in their custody.

Soon after the firing, protests broke out against the killing of the civilians. The traders downed their shutters and joined anti -India and pro-freedom protests.
