Police Sunday used water canons and tear smoke shells to break up a demonstration of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat workers protesting against authorities for foiling a party convention.
The activists staged the demonstration at Hyderpora in Srinagar after authorities banned a proposed convention of the amalgam by deploying a heavy contingent of police and paramilitary personnel outside the venue.
“We were protesting peacefully but police fired water canons and tear smoke shells after seeing our numbers swell,” said a protester.
Syed Ali Shah Geelani was scheduled to address the convention in which all the party bearers were to take part.
