Day 85; pellet victim succumbs at SKIMS, death toll mounting

Situation remained by and large peaceful: Police

Srinagar, Oct 01 : Though the curfew was lifted from the Valley on 85th day in Kashmir, on more youth who hails from Check-i-Kawoosa in central Kashmir’s Budgam district succumbs to his injuries.


On Saturday morning, a pellet hit injured youth was rushed to SKIMS Soura from SKIMS JVC when his heath condition got deteriorated.

According to KNS correspondent Muneer Dar, the deceased identified as Muzaffar Ahmad Pandit, son of Mohammad Ramzan, a resident of Check-i-Kawoosa in central Kashmir’s Budgam district.

 

Muzaffar was shot by pellets and doctors operated his left eye several times. “He was suffering from Sepsis,” sources in SKIMS hospital said. “Doctors put him on ventilator but he lost battle of his life.”

He according to locals had sustained multiple pellet injuries in his body during the protests in the area on Sep 14.

Locals said that he developed some complications last night and was rushed to SDH Magam where from he was referred to Srinagar’s hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, thousands of people attended the funeral prayers of a slain youth.
Reports said that amid tears and sobs, thousands of people attended the funeral prayers of Pandit during which they raised anti-India and pro-freedom slogans.

Pandit was laid to rest in the graveyard at his native Check-e-Kawoosa village near the Srinagar-Gulmarg highway.




Meanwhile, clashes erupted between youth and forces in Maisuma area of Lal Chowk during which forces used tear gas canisters to disperse the youth.

Reports of clashes were also reported from several old city areas during the late evening hours during which forces dispersed youth by resorting to tear gas shelling in the areas.
Meanwhile a complete shutdown was today observed across the Valley on the 85th straight day on Saturday.

All the educational institutions, petrol pumps, business establishments and others remained closed throughout the day.

However, the uptown areas of summer capital including the business hub Lal Chowk, Raj Bagh, Jawahar Nagar, Dalgate and others continued to witness a considerable movement of private transports today.

Reports said that the youth at several places had erected temporary barricades to thwart the vehicular movement in their localities.

Meanwhile, reports said that police arrested Ummat-e-Islami senior leader Moulana Sarjan Barkati at Wanpoh while he was on way to Arwani.

Barkati is a popular Muslim cleric from Shopian district and a senior leader of Ummat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir, headed by Mirwaiz Qazi Yasir.

Barkati was immediately booked under notorious Public Safety Act (PSA), a statement issued by Ummat-e-Islami said this evening.

Barkati was instrumental in organizing public rallies across South Kashmir in the on-going civilian uprising. He popularized “new forms of anti-India sloganeering” that went viral across Kashmir. Since his peculiar way of sloganeering, he is popular among youth as “Freedom Chacha”.

Reports said that Police had been conducting raids on Barkati’s house in Shopian. “The police have also ceased his property and threatened the inmates including his six year old son, Azaan Barkati,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, according to a statement issued by the Zonal Police Headquarters Kashmir, the situation across the valley remained by and large peaceful today. “There was no curfew in any part of the valley,” it said.

According to the statement during the day no untoward incident was reported from any part of the valley. “There was greater movement of people and vehicular traffic observed in Srinagar city as also in other parts of the valley,” it said.




The statement said that to curb the activities of trouble mongers police arrested 51 such individuals involved in various offences of creating disturbances in different part of the valley. (KNS)
